Your TAX id number is also known as your “employer id number” or (EIN) and is used by the federal government to identify your business. If you own a business then you need an EIN for the sole purpose of tax processing with the IRS.

When would I need to apply for a new EIN or Tax ID?

If your business ownership or the setup (in some circumstances) has changed you may need to apply for a new EIN. If you’ve only changed your business name you do not have to apply for a new EIN. You should notify both the federal and state agencies of your business name change.

The following are events require a new Tax ID:

Corporations

  • Your corporation obtains a new charter from the SOS (secretary of state)
  • A new corporation is form after a legal merger
  • You are a subsidiary of a corporation using the primary corps EIN or you become a division of a corporation
  • You change from a partnership to a different type of entity or from a sole proprietorship a different type of entity

Sole Proprietors

  • You decide to incorporate
  • You begin operating as a partnership
  • You inherit or purchase an existing business that you are going to operate as a sole proprietor

Partnerships

  • You decide to incorporate
  • You lose or hand over your partnership to one of the partners who changes the business model to a sole proprietorship
  • You close one partnership and start another one

Estates

  • A trust is created with money from the estate; that is not just a continuation of the estate
  • You act on behalf of the estate that operates a business after the death of the estate holder

Trusts

  • A trust that must be changed to an estate
  • The Type of trust you applied for needs to be changed
